Bringing your own laptop

Bringing your own laptop is not a requirement to attend the Summer School, but if you have one, we recommend you bring it to work more comfortably with your own setup. If you bring a laptop, you will need:

  1. A ssh client for accessing the cluster and transferring files back and forth from your machine to the cluster. Any standard Linux distribution, and Mac OSX, comes with ssh clients. Participants with other operating systems may need to install one. A collection of OpenSSh clients can be found at www.openssh.com/windows.html. (PuTTY is a popular, free implementation.)
  2. Wireless connectivity. The computer labs and lecture room will have wireless. We will provide the valid access id (essid) during the lectures and tutorials. However, participants should know how to modify their personal settings.

Additional recommended tools on your laptop are:

  1. To visualize the data on your machine, you will need X11.
  2. buy levitra
  3. Compilers: fortran90 and C compilers

Review session

There will be a review session on Monday afternoon, June 13th, to go over where things are on the network and how to use the compilers. If you aren't comfortable with Unix and/or working within a shell, this session will also quickly cover the basic commands you will need.

The main target audience for the unix tutorial is those who are not familiar with the unix system. The Welcome packet you receive at the school will contain the basic information on your temporary accounts during the school. All the programs used during the lectures and tutorials will be pre-compiled and packaged.

We plan to cover:

  • how to connect to the computing machines
  • how to transfer files back and forth
  • how to use web browsers to submit jobs
  • how to use common visualization tools

As time permits, we will use Q&A format to address any question the attendees may have.

Please note: this review will not provide instruction on how to use programs on participants' personal computers, such as how to use ssh or to enable X tunneling. Participants should be familiar with the programs and utilities of their choice.
