Cyberinfrastructure in Materials Research

From Cyberinfrastructure to Cyberdiscovery in Materials Science: Enhancing outcomes in materials research, education and outreach through cyberinfrastructure

This website is produced by the Steering Committee for Cyberinfrastructure in Materials Science, convened by the Division of Materials Research (DMR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The purpose of the website is to present the report and presentations from the NSF sponsored workshop "From Cyberinfrastructure to Cyberdiscovery in Materials Science: Enhancing outcomes in materials research, education and outreach" held in Arlington, Virginia August 3-5, 2006. More importantly, it provides a mechanism to seek feed-back from the materials community on this important topic.

Cyberinfrastructure (the hardware, software, and people that enhance our work through electronics and computers) will have a large impact on our research, and how we do our research, in materials science in the upcoming years. It will have an equally profound impact on how we teach and learn, collaborate and engage the broader community. The workshop, this website, and the other activities outlined here, will all provide feedback to the Division of Materials Research at NSF about the vision, needs and desires of the materials community in this regard, to help inform good decisions on a strategy for cyberinfrastructure in DMR. Equally important are the areas where materials science discoveries are driving cyberinfrastructure developments, and these will be identified as part of this process.
